This week, we have continued writing our travel guide for places in North America and will be completing our final versions next week.  In maths, we have come to the end of our place value unit and will be moving on to the four operations.  We are really looking forward to welcoming parents into our maths lesson on Tuesday for our first parent workshop of the year.  In topic, we have been focusing on physical and human features of geography.  Mount Rushmore provoked some interesting discussions in class as to whether it was physical or human.  In DT, we have started measuring and sawing wood, ready to construct our money boxes.  We have also made some prototypes to test the best way of joining wood.

Your child should come home with their spelling book and the new spellings we will be working on next week, ready for the test on Friday.  If they forget to bring their book home, please see the new spelling list below.  We hope you have a lovely weekend.

Another week has flown by in Year 5.  This week, we have been busy researching different places in America so that we can write our own travel guides.  Some of the places we have researched are: New York, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park.  It has been really interesting finding out about the weather, what you can do there and how much things cost.  In maths, we have been focusing on place value.  In Science, we have continued learning about night and day and have looked at different states in the USA during our geography lessons.

We have not had a spelling test this week as we have not had our usual spelling sessions in school.  The spellings sent home last week will be worked on in school next week and tested on Friday.  We hope you have a fantastic weekend!

This week, we have started our first English unit, which is all about writing a newspaper report about Theseus defeating the Minotaur in the labyrinth. We have recapped our knowledge of fronted adverbials and subordinate clauses. In Maths, place value is our current topic. The children have been able to identify the value of digits in a range of numbers and we have been rounding numbers too. During our History lesson, we found out about some of the key events during the Ancient Greek era and created timelines. Lots of fabulous homework is continuing to be handed in, linked to this topic. Keep up the hard work.
