This week the children have enjoyed Egyptian Day, where Queen Cleopatra visited us. We learned lots about mummification, built a pyramid and played mancala- an Ancient Egyptian game. Additionally, we have finished off instructions and built a shaduf!

    Happy holidays :-)

We have come to the end of the first half term! On Tuesday, we took part in a live online assembly, to celebrate Black History Month, where we learnt about different traditions and cultures. We had our first parent workshop. It was great to see parents joining our Maths lesson, to work on long multiplication. It hasn't been easy but our accuracy and confidence is continuing to improve. In History, we explored the lasting legacy of the Ancient Greeks. We found out that they still influence our lives today through democracy, our alphabet and buildings. Thank you for all of the homework that has been completed this half term too. Swimming will continue next half term, starting on the first day back (4th November).

I hope you have a great holiday.

This week, we have monitored the progress of our mummifying tomatoes- the control is squidgy and smelly but the mummifying one has shrunk a little and is becoming harder. In English, instructions have continued to be our focus and we have written instructions on how to create a salt dough cartouche and even how to make a Great pyramid! We are looking forward to meeting Queen Cleopatra on Monday.

Keep practicing your times tables on Times Table Rockstars and spellings have been given out.

In English, we have been finding out all about the Ancient Greek Olympic Games so that we can write our own non-chronological reports next week. We have been investigating prime, square and cube numbers in our Maths lessons whilst developing our reasoning skills. We were lucky to have an assembly from GEDA (the construction company developing Hickings Lane park) who told us about site safety and the machinery they are using. We have finally completed our Greek pots by painting them, using the traditional colours of orange and black. They look amazing.

Another week has flown by in Year 5.  This week, we have started a new unit in English.  We have been reading the book 'Hidden Figures' which is about four American women who played a vital role in the Space Race.  In maths, we have been working on addition and subtraction and using the inverse calculation to check answers.  In science, we learnt about why have different seasons.  In geography, we focused on Florida, researching different animals and plant life to create a mini fact file.

On Tuesday, we had a special assembly from GEDA, the construction company working on Hickings Lane Park, who gave some great advice on how to stay safe around the park whilst the work in taking place.

Please see below the spellings for next week.

In Maths, we revisited formal addition and subtraction with whole and decimal numbers before applying our skills to problem solving questions. We have also found common factors and multiples. In English, our newspaper reports are complete and they look great. We spent time editing these to make them the best they could be. The vocabulary being used has been really impressive. This week in Spanish, we learnt the words for some of our family members. Letters also went home about our parent workshop for Maths - please return the slip if you can join us. It will be great to see you.

    Have a great weekend.
