Update from Mrs Marshall 5M
Fri 09 Oct 2020In 5M this week, we have ventured out into space in English and found another solar system. One of the moons orbiting the planet Polyphemus contained 6 legged bioluminescent creatures. We have been enjoying creating our own creature and writing a non-chronological report describing the creature and other information about it. In Art, the children started to use Mod roc to provide a hard outer layer to their sculptures.

Update from Year 4 Teachers
Fri 09 Oct 2020This week in Science we made a comic strip about the journey of digestion where we used thought bubbles and speech bubbles to animate and bring the part of digestion to life.
In DT next week we will finally be making our shadufs that we have been planning for the last couple of weeks. In preparation for this we have been cutting the wood with saws making sure we measure this correctly beforehand.

Update from Year 6 Teachers
Fri 02 Oct 2020On Thursday, Year 6 had a virtual Teams meeting with Mrs York from Friesland Secondary School. She spoke to the children about the school and how much she was looking forward to seeing more of them in the future. All the children listened well and asked really important questions.
This week we have moved onto the four operations in maths and had the opportunity to explore some of Wilfred Owen's war poetry as well as Allan Ahlberg's well known poem 'Please Mrs Butler'. They had great fun coming up with their own humorous versions.

Update from Year 3 Teachers
Fri 02 Oct 2020Year 3 have thoroughly enjoyed Science this week. We’ve been investigating friction using different materials, a ramp and a toy car. The children enthusiastically predicted how far the car would travel on each material before trying the real thing and seeing how close their predictions were!

Fri 02 Oct 2020Good news for English this week. The children have persuaded Mrs Cave to go on 26 different holidays with their travel brochures! For poetry morning, we read some poems by Walter de La Mare and Edward Lear and wrote our own poems in the style of 'The Owl and the Pussy-Cat.'

Update from Mrs Marshall 5M
Fri 02 Oct 2020In Year 5 this week, we have started to create our internal structures for our Modroc sculptures! The children used newspaper and masking tape to do this. We also enjoyed writing poetry on National Poetry Day (Thursday), investigating poetry by Walter de la Mare and Edward Lear and from this were able to write a poem in the style of Edward Lear’s ‘The Owl and the Pussy Cat. Our knowledge is growing about Space as we learned about how day and night are caused and were amazed to hear that in some parts of the world at some points in the year, there is almost no daylight and it is dark for most of each day!

Updates from Year 4 Teachers
Thu 01 Oct 2020This week in Year 4 we used yeast, sugar and water in a zip lock food bag to represent a cow's stomach during digestion. We found the mixture started to bubble and the gas from this caused the bags to expand.
It was also National Poetry Day on the 1st October and in celebration of this we created our own version of Michael Rosen's poem 'Don't'. We enjoyed creating some nonsense but rhyming 'Don'ts' for our poems.
Finally, in English we learnt how to write instructions on how to make an Egyptian plaque out of salt dough. Examples of the plaques we made in preparation for this are included below!

Teacher Updates 24/9/20
Thu 24 Sep 2020Year 3 have been learning about structures in DT this week. We have been focusing on the importance of triangles and how this can make a building or bridge stronger. The children have been practising building with straws and reinforcing what they have built. We look forward to using cardboard triangles to see if this can help our structures even more next week!

In Year 4 this week we did our first science experiment where we found out what saliva and bile does to our food during digestion. In topic we learnt how to write our names in Egyptian Hieroglyphs on papyrus paper and we finally discovered how the Dream Giver ended in English.

In 5M this week, the children have once more enjoyed swimming at Bramcote Leisure Centre. We have worked hard on rounding in Maths and have started researching a North American location (topic link) in order to write a travel brochure to persuade a tourist to visit (one day in more normal circumstances!). The children loved Spanish this week with a teacher, who will be returning to Year 5 until half term, from The Bramcote School. In Art, they designed their sculpture in the style of Henry Moore (next week may be a little messier!!!) and have been interesting in learning more about the size and shape of the Earth, moon and sun and also why day and night occur. Another busy week!!!

This week we've been starting to learn the new 100 words for Year 5. These can be found at the back of the partnership books. Please take some time to learn them.

It has been a great week in Year 6. We have been learning about light, investigating how shadows are formed and how they can change depending on the light source. In History, we have continued learning about the Ancient Greeks, learning about the different city states whilst focusing on the differences between Athens and Sparta.
Please remember that the deadline for secondary school applications is the end of October and that local secondary schools are offering virtual open evenings and that some are offering open days. Take a look at their websites for more information.
