We have had a really busy week settling in after the Christmas break and all the children seem refreshed and ready to go for another term. This week, we have started our new WWII topic. We have been learning about the different events that lead up to the start of the second world war ; in English, we have started our new writing genre using persuasive techniques to convince young soldiers to join the army.

As we move into this term, we just wanted to say that our PE days are Mondays and each week, children will be receiving a new spelling list. You can see this below.

It has been so lovely to have all the children back after the Christmas break and hearing about their lovely holidays.  This week, we started a new unit in history - The Normans.  On Tuesday, we looked at the events that led up to the Battle of Hastings and why it was significant.  In English, we have started learning about playscripts and have identified the key features. In reading, we have started our new text for the term which is Robin Hood.

Each week the children are given spellings to learn at home and in school.  They are tested on these at the end of the week.  Below are the spellings for next week.

Happy New Year. This week has been a busy one, beginning with the visit of Nigel Vardy, where we heard about the adventures that he has had but also what can happen when things don't go to plan. Rather than being defeated by frost bite injuries, he has shown resilience and conquered many more challenges.

Our new unit is Mountains and Earthquakes- we will be reading King of the Cloud Forests by Michael Morpurgo. In Art, we have researched the artist Nicholas Roerich, who painted many paintings of mountains. Music with Miss Woolley has also begun again for this half term

As always, we ask that you read with your children- a Starbooks treat if the children read three times. Spellings come out weekly and the homework grids will be distributed.

It has been a lovely week in Year 5 this week.  We have completed our Christmas RE unit and completed our Indus Valley style jewellery.  The children made either a bracelet or a necklace our of clay.  They used clay for the beads and when they were dry, they painted them in similar colours and patterns to those they researched.  Today we have had our Christmas party and celebrated the end of term.  We hope you all have a fantastic Christmas and look forward to seeing you all in the new year!

This week, year 6 have been super busy. We have started our writing unit on explanation texts, exploring, in more detail, how rainbows are created, which works alongside our science unit of light. We have also been practicing relentlessly for our upper school church production which has been performed this morning. It was a fantastic performance from all of the children and they can be very proud of their achievements. It was definitely a lovely way to finish a brilliant week here at Albany

We have had a fantastic week.  It was so lovely to welcome parents into the classroom on Tuesday for our Science lesson.  We experimented with paper helicopters, trying to find out how to make the best helicopter.  Today, we had our Christmas performance at Church and the children were fantastic.  This afternoon, we got messy with clay to create our Indus Valley style jewellery.

Fri 15 Dec 2023 Mrs Marshall & Miss Stephenson

After last week’s amazing theatre trip to watch Cinderella at the Nottingham Playhouse, Year 4 were amazing as performers themselves in our Christmas carol concert at St Helen’s Church on Thursday. Their hard work and practice really paid off! On Wednesday we also had our science parent workshop where we found out results of our experiment into which liquids/drinks are most harmful to our enamel and why. Thank you to all the parents that came with us to the church on Thursday and attended our parent workshop on Wednesday, it is very much appreciated. After our theatre trip, our English lessons have been linked to Cinderella and have learnt that there are many versions of the story of Cinderella, even dating back to Ancient Egyptian times so we have been working towards writing our own version of Cinderella linked to our current topic of South Africa. In Maths, we have finished our unit on Area and have done extremely well with this, we have also looked at negative numbers and next week will be working out the difference of temperatures etc. That will include negative numbers. Have a great weekend!
