Fri 30 Jan 2026 Miss Ottowell & Miss Carmichael

This week, in English, Y6 have been finding out about Anne Frank, how WW2 affected her and why she is still remembered today. We will be using this research to write our own biographies about her. Also linked to WW2, we have been learning about the Holocaust and how Jewish people were treated. This will help us a lot when we visit the Holocaust Centre in April.

In Maths, we have been learning something brand new - ratio. We have learnt how to write and calculate ratios and we have also been introduced to proportion, which helps us to adapt the ingredients in a recipe.

We also took part in worry workshops this week, where we thought about the affect anxiety can have on us. To help us, we discussed different strategies that can be used.

As usual, this term is flying by!  This week in English, we have been exploring playscripts and have had a go at performing one.  We have identified the different features and next week we will begin writing our own about Robin Hood.  In maths, we finished our unit on multiplication and division and are returning to fractions.  In Science, we learnt about asexual reproduction in plants and how a strawberry plant is quite special as it actually requires both asexual and sexual reproduction.  In History, we learnt about why William II was killed.

Year 4 have started working towards writing a bibliography on Edmund Hillary, the first man to reach the summit of Mount Everest with his Sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay, so far we have looked at the features of a bibliography and have done research on him to find out more about his life and achievements. In Independent Writing, we have tried to use fronted adverbials, the present perfect tense and non-finite clauses. In Topic, we have looked at the positive and negative effects of mountain tourism and in Science, we have looked at the results of last weeks experiment and observed that heat speeds up the process of evaporation. Have a great weekend.

Fri 30 Jan 2026 Mr Harding & Miss Brown

This week we had our mental health workshop on Tuesday, children were really getting involved in using techniques to support them through stressful times. We had a fantastic lesson in History looking at gladiators and the children were thrilled and surprised by what these men had to endure. We have now finished our division and multiplication unit with children achieving some great scores on the end of unit assessment and they have also really enjoyed writing their own ending to Black Rock in our independent write. They designed their Roman shields this weeks and conducted another experiment using magnets in science, looking at which metals are magnetic and which are not.

  • Year 6 News

Fri 23 Jan 2026 Miss Ottowell

There has been lots of brilliant work in Year 6 this week. In Maths, we have been learning about metric and imperial measurements and how to convert them. This was a good way to recap our knowledge of place value and fractions. In History, we found out about the precautions that Britain took during WW2, including blackouts and building air raid shelters. We have been really impressed with how engaged the children are in this topic, including during music and art lessons. We have written our speeches too and they definitely sound persuasive. The vocabulary and techniques used have added to the effectiveness of them, making the information sound more tempting.

Another wet one this week, lots of wet plays but the children have coped with this amazingly. We have planned our Black Rock story in English ready to write up and have really got to grips with 2 digit multiplication and division in Maths, some really good understanding of using the inverse to check our answers. We managed to get outside for both P.E sessions with the children making progress in netball and trying out rugby for the first time. We continue to increase our knowledge about the Romans, looking at their legacies and magnetic forces was the science experiment this week. Below are next week’s spellings.

In English, we have been developing our persuasive skills, using exaggeration, rhetorical questions and other persuasive techniques. During our Science lesson, we explored how animals can be grouped, depending on their characteristics and whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates. We learnt new vocabulary, including annelids, molluscs and crustaceans. There were some creative groups balances on show in gymnastics too this week.

This week has flown by and we can't believe it is the weekend already.  Before you know it, it will be half term! In English, we had our first debate.  Everyone listened well and contributed their thoughts confidently and clearly.  After hearing all the evidence, it was concluded that the team advocating Harold Hardrada was the most persuasive and therefore who we chose to be our next King of England.  In maths, we have moved on to long multiplication.  This is always a really tricky method to pick up but everyone is trying hard and beginning to pick it up well.  In science, we have continued learning about how plants reproduce, focusing on using insects as pollinators.  In history, we have been learning about Motte and Bailey Castles.
