Year 5 News
Fri 24 Jan 2025Another busy week in Year 5. In English, we finished writing up our persuasive letters which were fantastic. The children used the work we did during the debate to write a formal letter to The Witan. In maths, we have moved on to fractions and have been multiplying an integer by a fraction and mixed numbers, moving on to finding fractions of amounts. Once again, it highlights just how important times table facts are. Today, we have welcomed The GREAT project again, looking at healthy and happy relationships between friends and family. In DT, we continued our sewing and learnt how to do cross stitch. It is all very fiddly!
If you have not yet returned the Norman letter and money, please do so soon otherwise we will be forced to cancel the workshop.
Next week's spellings are below and in your child's spelling book.

Fri 17 Jan 2025In Maths this week, we have been learning about imperial and metric units of measurement. We have found out how they link to every day life and we have been converting between different units. We are now moving on to ratio.
We have written our persuasive speeches, using all of the techniques we have learnt about and everyone has focused on the positives in order to make signing up to army sound like a fantastic opportunity. The children can be very persuasive!
In Science, we explored the different groups that animals belong to (such as reptiles, arachnids, mammals and molluscs) and the characteristics that they must have. We also thought about the reasons why a spider isn't an insect.
Have a great weekend.

In English, we have started writing the drafts of our narrative story and in math, we have continued with our multiplication and division unit. The children have settled back in to their classroom routine really well! The highlight of our week on the other hand has to be our assembly on Tuesday, where an outside provider came in and demonstrated the use of many different rock band instruments! Fri 10 Jan 2025We have had a fab start to the new term. On Tuesday, we had an amazing assembly from Rocksteady Music School. All the children learnt about the different instruments in a rock band and got to sing, dance and rock out to the different songs. It even ended with three members of staff forming their own rock band, performing 'We Will Rock You' to the school.
In class, we have started our new unit in history, learning about the Normans and why the Battle of Hastings was so important. In English, we are using our knowledge of the Battle and the events that led up to it to have a debate about who we would have chosen to be king. In maths, we have been learning how to do long multiplication. Although some have found it difficult, they have shown great resilience and starting to get the hang of it.
To support our Norman unit, we will be having a workshop in school. Please see the letter that was sent home on Tuesday and return to school ASAP. Without your support, the event will have to be cancelled.
The spellings for next week are attached below.

Year 6 News
Fri 10 Jan 2025It has been great to see everyone back in school after the Christmas break, settling back into routines and new topics. We also had an amazing assembly from Rock Steady on Tuesday.
Our new topic is World War 2 and this week, we explored the reasons why the war began. In our English work, we have been using persuasive phrases and techniques in order to persuade young men to sign up and fight in WW2. There has been a lot of exaggeration and bias to make this sound appealing.
In PE this half term, we are going to be developing our skills in gymnastics and we started by practicing different leaps. Everyone tried really hard to show a cat, split and stag leap.
