Year 6 have had a fantastically Greek week. We have continued our writing unit on Theseus and the Minotaur, and we have rounded off the week with a Greek day, where the children learned lots about the Spartan army, used many different Green artefacts, played Ancient Greek Olympic sports and listened to Greek myths with our outside provider! We are very proud of how the children behaved.

This week, we have continued writing our travel guides about North America and have learnt about the different human and physical features in the USA.  In maths, we have come to the end of our place value unit and are moving on to addition and subtraction.  In Science, we explored the solar system and learnt about the differences between each of the planets.  It has been lovely hearing the children sing songs ready for our Harvest celebration next week and a little scary to hear Christmas songs being sung in September! Spellings are fully underway in class.  Please see the spellings below that the children will be tested on next Friday.

    Fri 29 Sep 2023 Mrs R Marshall & Miss S Stevenson

This week, Year 4 have continued to research the Ancient Egyptians and what their life was like in comparison to our own. We have written  Ancient Egyptian stories in English. Despite the showers, the children have been able to get outside for PE, considering how to be a team and developing their hockey skills.

There are some children wearing hooped earrings- these need to be removed as they are not school uniform for health and safety reasons. Studs should be worn, but ideally need to be removed for PE 🙂

Year 4 still need 2 more adults for the Harvest Festival in order for ratios to be accurate. If you are able to accompany us (1pm Tues 3rd October)

In Science, we studied rocks to find different properties. Next week, we have Harvest Festival and our Reading parent workshop, we are looking forward to another busy week. We have had a really busy week in year 6 and it has been brilliant to finally get on to our units of teaching. The children have taken to our Theseus and the Minotaur English unit really well and seem excited about doing more writing linked to the Ancient Greeks.

This week, we have also had Severn Trent visit us, where the children were able to take a dive into how the sewerage system works! They had good fun taking part in our experiment, filtering different materials in order to clean water to make it safe to drink. We are looking forward to yet another busy week next week.

Another fab week in Year 5.  On Thursday, we had a special visit from Severn Trent water.  They did a whole school assembly and then taught us all about how to look after our sewers.  We discussed what was safe to put down the toilet and the drains and then we worked in groups to filter dirty water.

In Science, we learnt about night and day and why this happens.  In English, we continued learning about travel brochures and began researching a place in America so that we can begin writing our own travel guides next week.

    Fri 22 Sep 2023 Mrs R Marshall

This week has been exciting for year 4 to get back to work. We have described Egyptian settings and described the characters in a story from Ancient Egypt- Osiris and Seth. We will be working up to write our own stories with a hero and a villain next week. In Maths, Place Value is our first unit. Science continued by investigating the function of saliva with a cracker experiment (the longer the cracker stays on our tongue, the softer it gets) and discovering that washing up liquid helps break down vegetable oil like enzymes in the liver break down fats in our food.

Music was rather noisy but we enjoyed playing a rhythm with quavers and crotchets on percussion instruments. We have learned that Ancient Egyptian society had a hierarchy where the Pharaoh was the most important and slaves were the least important. We learned that the shaduf was an Ancient Egyptian water moving device! We will be designing and making our own in the coming weeks.
