It has been a quiet week in Year 6 with so many children off.  It has been so lovely to have some children feeling better and coming back to school.  In English this week, we have started looking at the narrative poem The Highwayman.  Is a fantastic poem and we get so much out of it.  We have finished our unit on fractions in maths and will be starting geometry next week. In topic, we have continued learning about WW2 and who the leaders were.

This week, we have started a new topic in Maths - fractions. So far, we have found equivalent fractions and we have converted mixed number and improper fractions. In English, we have written informal letters from the point of view of Robin Hood, who had been captured and was writing to Maid Marian. Mrs Cave was particularly impressed with her English group. In Science, we found out how seeds are dispersed and we made or own versions of the sycamore 'helicopters.'

This week we have been slowly returning to some degree of normal and it has been fantastic to see returning faces but we are missing those that are not here. Get well soon if you are off.

We have been continuing to study mountains and have considered whether mountains are places tourists would like to visit and why. In English we have been continuing to learn about newspapers and next week plan to write a newspaper report about Nigel Vardy (the mountaineer who visited our school) and the incident in 1999 on Mount McKinley. In Science, we set up an experiment about evaporation and found that water evaporated when in a warmer atmosphere.

It has been a busy week in Year 6.  We have explored different types of poetry in English and have written our own poems about war.  In maths, we have continued our work on fractions.  We have been dividing fractions and finding fractions of amounts.  In topic, we have been exploring the events that caused World War Two to happen and questioning what could have been done differently to prevent it.  In science, we have been using classification keys to group animals according to their features.

It certainly has been interesting in Year 4. We have missed many of our children and hope they are making a speedy recovery. For those of us in school, we have started a new English unit called Spy Fox, which the children have loved and have interviewed witnesses of Dr Hammer's terrible crimes! In Topic and Reading sessions, we have learned more about mountains and have set up an evaporation experiment in Science. We hope to be back to full strength next week and are looking forward to seeing you all. Have a good weekend.

This week, we have started our mountains topic and welcomed a special visitor into school. His name was Nigel Vardy and he is part of Bear Grylls' Project X, which focuses on inspirational people who have overcome difficulties and achieved. He is a climber and mountaineer. During one of his expeditions in Alaska, disaster struck and he developed frostbite, leaving him with injuries that he had to overcome. He told his story and kept everyone mesmerised. We have also learned that there are mountains in the United Kingdom and have started our art project based on mountains and the artist Nicholas Roerich.

Year three have started a new English theme of poetry this week and it is called “Coming Home” by Michael Morpurgo, about a robin travelling home in the winter. The video can be watched on You Tube if you want to watch it together. We have been observing rocks in science and started the new topic of Stone Age to Iron Age. We are really trying to learn our 4,8,3,6 times tables too.
